Wagner wouldn't be flattered

I've been putting my 4-month-old to sleep by humming "The ride of the Valkyries" to him. It works well.

When your young 'un insists on watching "Apocalypse Now" instead of Cartoon Network, your missus will know exactly whom to blame. :)

my mind quakes at the thought of the valkyries going carnatic.

What's it with fathers of helpless babies? Why do you do this to them?

km - the missus does worse things. And apparently this tune is not unknown to cartoon watchers.

tr - my talents don't extend that far: imitating loud horns is about my limit.

abi - thanks for the link. We don't have any Erle Stanley Gardner at home, maybe Dorothy Sayers will do? Or Sherlock Holmes?

ah, loud horns. reminds me of the time i and the-artist-formerly-known-as-cow (you know who) watched aghast as a father slapped his six-month old to sleep -- palm landing squarely across the kid's face, the smack audible across the house.

tr: hm. Where was this father and how did you come to be watching him?

It's funny when it's in Asterix (Getafix: "We'll talk when the interpreter is asleep." Obelix: [*bonk* on interpreter's head] "He's asleep. We can talk.") But not funny with a 6-month-old.

the father was in huntington, long island, a relative-in-law. we came to be watching him by following the sound up the corridor to the bedroom from the living room where we'd been watching television. the previous night tafkac, who'd been invited there by us, had entertained ril and assorted friends with his deft moment by moment commentary on the new release "hum saath saath hain" (which had quickly been renamed "hum satattar hain").
