Good news

Dr Binayak Sen has been granted bail. About time.

The story is not over yet. I'm sure the state government will do what it can to get him behind bars.

Well, I don't know whether they can jail him again on another pretext, and if they do they risk the SC's wrath... and even then, it can't be worse than the last 2 years. Meanwhile, he's free for now.

TR and RS,
Earlier the Supreme Court refused to take the bail applications but has stepped in now. I do not know what caused this change; perhaps some of the other cases in the Supreme Court against the State govt. But "Sen said the Chattisgarh Jansuraksha movement was still in place and there were several people who have been put in jail under 'that law' (UAPA).

"It is my responsibility to remind you all that many people have been troubled by such laws and I am not alone. I am a representative of the people," he said." from today's report in Rediff.
The following article:
http://www.sacw.net/article922.html
says that earlier Manmohan Singh appealed for Sen's release. Given the widespread support and that the Spteme Court has stepped in, Dr. Binayak Sen may be safe for now.

Interesting. Until reading your link I didn't know that Manmohan had appealed for his release, though I'd seen (unsubstantiated) mentions on other blogs.

But the other thing to keep in mind is that his trial is currently on in Raipur, and depending on the verdict there, he could be back in jail. Of course if it's an adverse verdict, they will appeal, but they will need to hope for a stay from the SC -- otherwise the process could take years.
